A Gentler, Kinder Reston

by Dean Rogers

Amidst the effort the movers and shakers of Reston are taking to construct evermore numerous business and shopping facilities, we would do well to remember that Reston gets its primary attractiveness from human, not just commercial, values. It's not just 'the economy, stupid', it's the lifestyle.

Instead of evermore elaborate temples to the Mammons of shopping, zone-varianced housing, and other developer-windfalls, we need more concern for the softer, more human infrastructure.

Specifically, Reston needs better bicycle facilities! Besides a great climate, we are blessed with the W&OD Regional Park, providing efficient east-west bike access in the center of town. This excellent ex-railroad provides gentle grades and a straight path for efficient bike travel, but is hampered by a lack of over/under passes where it crosses main arteries such as Reston Parkway. Also, there is no north-south section to access Restoners at those extremities.

The Reston trail system, while superb for pedestrian recreation, meanders through generally hilly sections making it very inefficient and confusing for getting from Point A to Point B on two wheels.

If new bike highways are impossible, then streets can be widened to add bicycle lanes. The main thoroughofares are currently very dangerous for bicyclists, especially during rush hour.

It's time to ask why little allowance to pedal-power has been made in Reston's domestic architecture? So few domiciles have garages, porches, special alcoves-pantrys-closets-cabinets for convenient bicycle storage. Many folks have to hang their bikes in the living room or else lug them up and down 2 flights of stairs. A good bike cannot be stored on a "deck".
